The Case for Buying Caffeine on Its Own

Most people get their caffeine from a pre-workout, which means paying for a flavour system, sweeteners and a dozen other ingredients they may not want or need.

Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors. Adenosine is the compound that accumulates through the day and makes you feel tired, so blocking its receptors delays the perception of fatigue rather than adding energy.

That distinction matters. Caffeine doesn't create energy; it masks tiredness while the effect lasts. Which is genuinely useful for a training session or a long shift, and also why it's no substitute for sleep.

The performance effects are well established. Caffeine is one of the most researched ergogenic aids in existence, with consistent evidence for endurance, power output, reaction time and perceived exertion.

Counting Your Total Intake

The single most important thing with a standalone caffeine product, and USN say it on the label themselves.

Most healthy adults tolerate up to around 400mg daily across all sources. One capsule is 200mg, which is half that budget. Add a coffee or two and you're at the ceiling before any pre-workout or energy drink.

Sources that add up faster than people expect: coffee (roughly 80–120mg a cup), pre-workout (150–400mg), energy drinks (80–200mg), fat burners (100–300mg), and tea.

And don't take it late. Caffeine's half-life is 5 to 6 hours, so 200mg at 5pm still leaves roughly 100mg in your system at 11pm. Sleep is where training adaptation happens, and losing it costs more than any session gains.
