What the Surged Edge Means

The black surged border is a tightly stitched overlock finish around the perimeter. It isn't decorative — it stops the embroidery threads fraying and gives the patch a defined edge that holds its shape through washing and wear.

Cheaper patches skip it or use a heat-cut edge, which is where fraying starts after a few months.

Sew-On, Not Iron-On

Worth knowing before you buy. This is a sew-on patch, which means it needs stitching rather than a hot iron.

That's the more durable option. Iron-on adhesive softens with heat and repeated washing, and iron-on patches eventually peel at the corners. Stitched patches stay put for the life of the garment.
