Why Three Whey Sources Instead of One

All three are whey. What differs is how far each has been processed, and that determines how fast it digests.

• Whey protein concentrate — filtered to roughly 70–80% protein by weight. The remainder is lactose, fat and minerals, which is why concentrate tastes creamier and costs less. Digests at a moderate pace.
• Whey protein isolate — filtered further, to around 90% protein or above. Most of the lactose and nearly all the fat removed. Higher protein density, faster absorption, gentler on sensitive stomachs.
• Hydrolysed whey — partially pre-digested with enzymes, breaking the protein chains into shorter peptides. Your body has less work to do, so it's the fastest-absorbing whey form available. Also the most expensive to produce.

Combining them gives you a fast initial amino acid spike from the hydrolysate and isolate, followed by a more sustained release from the concentrate. A single-source protein gives you one curve; a blend gives you both.

Naturally Occurring EAAs and BCAAs

The essential and branched-chain amino acids in Rule One Whey are intrinsic to the whey itself, not added separately as free-form powder to inflate the panel.

That distinction matters. Whey has one of the highest natural BCAA profiles of any protein source — roughly a quarter of its amino acid content is leucine, isoleucine and valine. Leucine is the trigger that activates the mTOR pathway and switches muscle protein synthesis on, and a 24g whey serve clears that threshold comfortably.

Where It Fits

This is an everyday protein rather than a specialist one. 24g per serve, good flavour, mixes easily, digests well — the qualities that determine whether a tub gets finished or sits in a cupboard.

If you want maximum protein density and minimum carbohydrate, fat and lactose, R1 Whey Isolate is the leaner option at 25g of pure isolate protein. It costs more per serve, and it's the right call during a cut or if concentrate upsets your stomach.

For general daily protein, the blend is better value and drinks creamier.

Directions

Mix one scoop with 200–300ml of cold water or milk. Shake or blend until smooth.

Best within 30–60 minutes of training, or any time you're short of your daily protein target. Water keeps macros lean; milk adds calories, thickness and a slower digestion curve.

Protein supplements support a diet built on whole food. Aim for your daily target across food and shakes combined, spread through the day rather than loaded into one sitting.

Is a blend worse than pure isolate?

Not worse — different. A blend gives you a longer amino acid release and a creamier drink at better value. Isolate gives you leaner macros and lower lactose at a higher price. Cutting or lactose-sensitive: isolate. Everyday protein: blend.

Will it upset my stomach?

The concentrate fraction contains lactose, which is the usual culprit behind protein-related bloating. If whey has caused you problems, try R1 Whey Isolate instead.

How many serves in 2LB?

Can I take it on rest days?

Yes, and you should. Muscle repair happens on rest days more than training days. Your daily protein target doesn't change because you didn't lift.
