Cold-Processed and Microfiltered — Why It Matters

How whey is processed determines what survives the process.

Heat and acid are the cheap ways to separate protein from liquid whey. They work, but they denature the protein and destroy its bioactive fractions — the immunoglobulins and lactoferrin that make whey more than a delivery vehicle for amino acids.

Microfiltration is a physical process: the liquid is passed across membranes that separate by molecule size. Cold-processing means it happens at low temperature. No acid, no high heat, no chemical solvents. The protein comes through with its structure and bioactive fractions intact.

Grass-Fed, Hormone-Free, Grade-A Dairy

The raw material is where a protein is really made or lost, and PVL start with grass-fed, hormone-free, grade-A dairy sources.

Grass-fed dairy has a more favourable fatty acid profile than grain-fed, including higher CLA and omega-3 content. In a whey isolate most of that fat is filtered out anyway — but in a concentrate-containing product it carries through, and it's a reasonable marker of overall raw material quality regardless.

Added Digestive Enzymes

PVL add enzymes to support digestion, and it's a practical inclusion rather than a marketing one. A meaningful number of people get bloating or discomfort from whey protein — some of it is lactose, some is simply the volume of protein hitting the gut at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does grass-fed actually matter?

For the protein itself, marginally — amino acid profiles are similar. It matters more as a marker of raw material quality and for the fatty acid profile in the small amount of fat that carries through. Worth having, not worth paying enormously more for on its own.

Will it upset my stomach?

Less likely than most, thanks to the added enzymes. If whey has caused you problems before, the usual culprit is lactose — try this, and if it still doesn't sit well, move to ISO Gold.
