Why the Form of Magnesium Matters

There are eleven different forms of magnesium, and they don't do the same job. Most people who supplement magnesium and get nothing from it are taking the wrong form for what they're trying to fix — typically magnesium oxide, which is cheap, poorly absorbed and mostly useful as a laxative.

What's In Every 5g Scoop

• Magnesium amino acid chelate — 1,050mg (210mg elemental) — the largest contributor by elemental magnesium. Chelated forms are bound to amino acids, which improves absorption through the intestinal wall compared to inorganic salts.
• Magnesium glycinate dihydrate — 427.35mg (50mg elemental) — the hero ingredient, and the reason this product exists. Magnesium bound to glycine.
• Magnesium citrate — 323.6mg (50mg elemental) — a well-absorbed, well-researched form contributing to overall magnesium status and muscle function.

Magnesium Glycinate — Why It's the Sleep Form

Glycinate is magnesium bound to glycine, and the glycine isn't just a carrier. It does three things that matter at night:

• Absorption. Binding magnesium to glycine creates a more stable molecule that passes through the intestinal wall more easily than inorganic magnesium salts. It's also markedly gentler on the stomach — glycinate is the form recommended for anyone who gets loose stools from other magnesium products.
• Nervous system. Glycine is itself an inhibitory neurotransmitter, working alongside GABA to slow brain stimulation. That's the mechanism behind falling asleep more easily rather than lying there wired.
• Body temperature. Glycine helps lower core body temperature, and a drop in core temperature is one of the physiological signals that initiates sleep.

Why Magnesium Matters for Recovery

Magnesium is a cofactor in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including muscle contraction and relaxation, nerve transmission and ATP production. Deficiency shows up as cramping, muscle spasms, twitches, poor sleep and elevated resting heart rate.

Athletes are more likely than most to run short. Magnesium is lost through sweat, training increases turnover, and stress depletes it further. Sleep is when the actual adaptation from training happens — growth hormone release peaks in slow-wave sleep and muscle protein synthesis runs overnight — so a magnesium product aimed at sleep quality is aimed at recovery, not just at feeling rested.

Directions

Adults: one 5g scoop daily with 200–250ml of water. PILLAR recommend taking it 30–60 minutes before sleep to get the full benefit of the glycinate.

Shake it, don't stir it. Stirring leaves lumps — a shaker gives a much better texture.

It isn't a sleeping tablet, so taking it earlier in the evening is fine if that suits you better. Store below 30°C.
