Isolate vs Concentrate — What You're Paying For

Whey starts as a liquid by-product of cheesemaking containing protein alongside fat, lactose and minerals. How far you filter it determines what you end up with.

Whey protein concentrate is filtered to somewhere between 70–80% protein by weight. The remainder is lactose, fat and minerals. It's cheaper and it tastes creamier, because fat and lactose carry flavour.

Whey protein isolate is filtered further, to around 90% protein or above. Most of the lactose and nearly all the fat is removed. What's left is a higher protein percentage per gram, and considerably less of the material that upsets sensitive stomachs.

Is isolate actually better than regular whey?

Purer, not better. For building muscle, the difference between 24g and 25g of protein is negligible. What isolate buys you is fewer carbs, less fat and less lactose — which matters if you're cutting or sensitive, and matters very little otherwise.

Is it lactose free?

Not entirely, but close. Ultra-filtration removes most of it. Mild intolerance is usually fine; a dairy allergy is not.

Does it taste worse than the regular whey?
