Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein 2Lb
Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey 2lb — 24g Protein, the Sensible Starting Size
Gold Standard 100% Whey is the best-selling whey protein in the world, and the 2lb tub is where most people should start. Each scoop delivers 24g of protein led by whey protein isolate, with 5.5g of naturally occurring BCAAs and over 4g of glutamine and glutamic acid, at around 120 calories. Instantised for easy mixing, gluten free, banned substance tested. In stock at TopDog Nutrition.
What Makes Gold Standard the Benchmark
Whey protein isolate is the first ingredient. That sounds like a technicality but it's the whole product. Isolate is filtered to strip out excess carbohydrate, fat and lactose, leaving a higher percentage of pure protein per gram. Most proteins lead with the cheaper concentrate and add a little isolate so they can put the word on the label. Optimum Nutrition does it the other way round, backing the isolate with ultra-filtered concentrate and a small amount of hydrolysed whey.
The result per serve: 24g of protein for around 120 calories, with roughly 3g of carbohydrate, 1g of sugar and 1–1.5g of fat. That's about 20g of protein per 100 calories — a ratio ready-to-drink shakes and protein bars rarely get close to.
5.5g BCAAs and 4g Glutamine — Naturally Occurring, Not Added
Worth understanding the distinction, because plenty of brands blur it. The 5.5g of branched-chain amino acids in Gold Standard aren't sprinkled in from a separate BCAA powder. They're intrinsic to the whey itself — roughly 26% of whey's amino acid content is leucine, isoleucine and valine, which is why whey is regarded as one of the best protein sources for muscle protein synthesis in the first place.
Same with the 4g+ of glutamine and glutamic acid. These numbers reflect what's genuinely in the protein rather than a lower-protein blend propped up with cheap free-form aminos to make the panel look better.
Leucine is the one that matters most: it's the amino acid that actually triggers the muscle protein synthesis pathway. A 24g whey serve comfortably clears the leucine threshold needed to switch that response on.
Instantised — It Mixes With a Spoon
Gold Standard is instantised, meaning the powder particles are treated to disperse in liquid instead of clumping on the surface. In practice you can stir it into a glass with a spoon and it dissolves. No shaker ball required, no gritty layer at the bottom.
Small thing, but it's the difference between a protein you actually take daily and one that becomes a chore.
Banned Substance Tested
Every batch is tested against banned substances. For anyone in drug-tested sport — or anyone who simply wants confidence in what they're swallowing every day — that testing programme is a meaningful part of what you're paying for.
Why Start at 2lb
Roughly 29 serves — about a month at one shake a day. It's the size that makes sense when you're new to protein powder, when you want to test a flavour before committing, or when you're a few sessions a week rather than daily.
Protein powder is a taste purchase as much as a nutritional one. Buying 10lb of a flavour you turn out to dislike is a genuinely miserable outcome. Start here, find the flavour you'll actually finish, then size up.
Once you know what you like: the 5lb drops the cost per serve noticeably, and the 10lb is the best value in the range if you're training consistently or feeding more than one person.
Directions
Mix one scoop into 180–240ml of cold water, milk or your drink of choice. Stir, shake or blend until dissolved.
Best taken within 30–60 minutes after training, or any time through the day when you need to close a protein gap. Water keeps it leanest; milk adds calories, thickness and a slower digestion curve.
Protein supplements work alongside food, not instead of it. Aim for your daily protein target across whole foods and shakes combined, spread through the day rather than loaded into one sitting.
Allergens
Contains milk and soy (soy from lecithin, used as a mixing agent). Gluten free. Contains lactase to aid digestion of residual lactose.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many serves in a 2lb tub?
Around 29, depending on flavour — scoop weights vary slightly between them.
Is this the same formula as the bigger tubs?
Identical. Only the container size changes. The larger tubs simply cost less per serve.
Can I take it on rest days?
Yes, and you should. Muscle repair happens on rest days more than training days. Your daily protein target doesn't change because you didn't lift.
Water or milk?
Water for the leanest macros and faster digestion. Milk for a thicker shake, more calories and a slower release — better if you're using it as a snack rather than post-training.
Is it suitable for people who are lactose intolerant?
Whey is dairy-derived so it isn't lactose free, but the isolate-first formula means residual lactose is low, and added lactase helps digest what's left. Most mildly lactose-intolerant people manage it fine. A diagnosed dairy allergy is a different matter — avoid it.
