NZProtein USA Whey 1kg — 20g Protein Per Serve, 32 Serves, Built for Value

USA Whey is NZProtein's budget tier: USA-sourced whey protein concentrate blended with whey powder, giving around 20g of protein per 31.25g serve across 32 serves per bag. Four options including an unflavoured version. In stock at TopDog Nutrition.

What You're Actually Buying

Worth being straight about this, because the label wording is easy to misread. USA Whey is a blend of two ingredients: whey protein concentrate, and whey powder.

Those are not the same thing. Whey protein concentrate is filtered to raise the protein content. Whey powder is dried whole whey, so it carries more lactose and milk sugars and far less protein per gram. Blending the two brings the cost down and lands the finished product at roughly 64 to 66 percent protein by weight.

For context, a premium isolate-led protein sits closer to 78 to 80 percent. That is the whole difference between this and the tier above, and it is reflected in the price.

The Number That Matters

You get about 20g of protein per serve, but the serve is 31.25g rather than the 30g you might assume. The remaining 11g is mostly carbohydrate and a little fat.

That is not a problem in itself. If you are hitting your daily protein target, where the grams come from matters far less than whether you reach the number. A 20g serve twice a day is 40g of protein toward a target that might be 140g. It does the job.

It becomes a problem if you are counting calories tightly or managing carbohydrate intake, because you carry about 5 to 7g of carbs along with every serve.

The Lactose Question

This is the one thing to check before you buy. The flavoured versions carry 5.6g of sugars per serve, and almost all of that is lactose coming from the whey powder. Per 100g that is 17.8g.

If dairy sits fine with you, this is irrelevant and you should buy on price. If you get bloating or stomach discomfort from milk-based proteins, this is the wrong product and the extra lactose will make it worse.

In that case go to NZProtein Whey Isolate, where the filtering strips most of the lactose out, or step outside dairy entirely with Beef Protein, Egg White Protein or Pea Isolate.

Double Chocolate is the lowest-sugar flavour at 4.1g per serve, since the cocoa displaces some of the whey powder.

Why the Unflavoured Version Is Underrated

Two ingredients, no sweetener, no flavouring. It has the highest protein of the four at 20.6g per serve, simply because nothing else is taking up space.

It is the one to buy if you are putting protein into porridge, baking, smoothies or yoghurt, where a vanilla or chocolate flavour fights whatever else is in the bowl. It also suits anyone avoiding sucralose.

Where It Sits in the NZProtein Range

USA Whey is the entry point. Lowest cost per serve, highest carbohydrate, around 20g of protein.

NZ Whey Protein is the middle tier, made from New Zealand grass-fed dairy, with more protein and fewer carbs per serve. If you want local dairy or a cleaner macro split, this is the step up. There is also a two-pack if you go through it quickly.

Whey Isolate is the top tier. Most protein per gram, least lactose, highest price.

The honest summary: if budget is the deciding factor and dairy agrees with you, USA Whey does the job. If either of those is not true, spend the extra.

How to Use It

  • Serve: 31.25g, about two scoops, in 250 to 300ml of water or milk.
  • Timing: Any time you are short on protein. Post-training is convenient, not magic. Total daily intake is what drives the result.
  • Mixing: Liquid in the shaker first, then powder, stops it clumping at the bottom.
  • Stacking: Creatine Monohydrate is the obvious partner and mixes straight into the same shake.

Common Questions

Is concentrate worse than isolate?
Not worse, just less filtered. Isolate gives more protein and less lactose per gram, which is what you pay for. Concentrate retains more of whey's natural bioactive fractions.

Can I bake with it?
Yes, and the unflavoured version is the one to use. Whey firms up when heated, so reduce baking time slightly or the result goes dry.

Why is the serve 31.25g and not 30g?
Because it takes slightly more of this powder to reach 20g of protein than it would with a higher-percentage product. Worth remembering when you compare price per serve between brands.
