ATP Science in NZ: HASTA Certified, Brisbane Made, and Why It's Worth Trying
Why ATP Science Is Worth Your Attention
Most supplement brands are marketing companies that outsource manufacturing. ATP Science isn't. They formulate their own products, make them in their own facility in Brisbane, and put the doses on the label where you can check them against the research.
That sounds like a small thing. It isn't. It's the difference between a proprietary blend hiding a token dose behind an impressive-sounding name, and a panel that tells you exactly what you're getting and how much.
Over 100,000 Australians use ATP Science. The full range is now available in New Zealand through TopDog Nutrition — 32 products spanning collagen protein, creatine, gut health, hydration, sleep and hormonal support.
Here's what actually sets it apart.
The Certifications — and What They Actually Mean
Supplement labels are covered in badges. Most of them mean very little. These three mean a great deal, so it's worth understanding what each one is telling you.
HASTA Certification — Batch-by-Batch Banned Substance Testing
HASTA stands for Human and Supplement Testing Australia. It's an independent third-party programme that tests supplements against the WADA prohibited list — over 250 banned substances — batch by batch, not once at launch.
That last part is the whole point. A brand can send one batch for testing, get a certificate, and print the logo on every tub for the next three years. Batch-level certification means the specific tub in your hand was tested.
If you compete in drug-tested sport — rugby, athletics, powerlifting, CrossFit, anything with an anti-doping framework — this isn't optional. Contamination in the supplement industry is real, and "I didn't know it was in there" has never been a successful defence at a tribunal.
HASTA-certified products in the ATP Science range include:
- Pre Plus™ — $69.90. Notable because high-stimulant pre-workouts are rarely HASTA certified.
- Protein Plus — $109.90
- Endurance Plus — $89.90
- Creapure® Creatine Chewables — $59.90
- NOWAY!® Creatine Monohydrate (500g tub) — from $29.90
TGA Listings — Regulatory Backing for the Claims
Several ATP Science products carry an AUST L number, meaning they're listed on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods. The Therapeutic Goods Administration has assessed the product and registered it with specific approved indications.
Practically, that means the claims on the label have regulatory backing rather than being marketing interpretation. A company can't simply decide its product "supports healthy sleep patterns" — that indication has to be approved.
- ZMAG — AUST L 320575, with 17 approved indications covering sleep, cramping, energy and immunity. $39.90
- Rest & Relax — AUST L 429995. $49.90
- Test Perform — AUST L 443118. $69.90
- NOWAY!® Creatine Monohydrate Chewables — AUST L 523646. $49.90
Patented, Trademarked and Clinically Studied Ingredients
This is where formulation quality shows most clearly. A trademarked ingredient means a specific manufacturer produced it to a specific standard — and usually that clinical research was run on that exact material rather than on the generic version.
Across the range you'll find:
- Creapure® — German creatine monohydrate at 99.99% purity from a single AlzChem facility, with verified absence of manufacturing impurities. It's the creatine specification used in most of the published research. Most creatine on the market is a 99% standard made in China.
- BODYBALANCE® — the German-engineered collagen peptide behind the NOWAY!® range, with published human trial data.
- Modbiotic® — ATP Science's patented 21-ingredient plant blend in GutRight®.
- Tendoforte® and Fortigel® — collagen peptide fractions in Protein Plus with independent research on tendon and cartilage specifically.
- Actazin®, DigeZyme® and FloraSMART™ — the NZ green kiwi, five-enzyme complex and postbiotic in GOODGUT™.
- OptiCreatine™ — the creatine form used across the NOWAY!® chewables and sachets.
No Artificial Colours, Flavours or Sweeteners — Across the Entire Range
Plenty of brands run one "natural" product and fill the rest of the range with sucralose and artificial colours. ATP Science applies it to everything they make.
That's a genuinely difficult commitment to keep. Natural sweeteners like thaumatin and steviol glycosides are more expensive and much harder to formulate with — they behave differently, and masking the bitterness of ingredients like creatine, Tongkat Ali or shilajit without artificial sweeteners is a real technical challenge.
Whether artificial sweeteners matter to you is a personal call. But if you've ever found sucralose leaves a chemical aftertaste, or you react poorly to it, an entire range formulated without it is worth knowing about.
NOWAY!® — Collagen Protein, and Why It's Different
NOWAY!® is ATP Science's collagen protein line, and it's the range they're best known for. The protein source is BODYBALANCE® hydrolysed bovine collagen peptides rather than whey.
The Research
A 2021 randomised controlled trial in middle-aged untrained men compared collagen peptides directly against whey protein alongside resistance training. The collagen group gained 3.42kg of fat-free mass; the whey group gained 2.27kg — over 50% more lean mass from the same training programme.
A separate 2019 randomised controlled trial in premenopausal women found 15g of collagen peptides combined with resistance training produced significantly better body composition and regional muscle strength outcomes than training alone.
Collagen peptides also work as signalling molecules, not just building material — specific peptide fragments prompt the body's own fibroblasts to increase collagen production. Since collagen is the primary structural protein in tendon, ligament, cartilage, bone and gut lining, the benefit extends well past muscle.
The Dairy-Free Advantage
NOWAY!® contains no whey, no lactose and no casein. If whey protein leaves you bloated — a very common complaint — the culprit is usually lactose, and removing dairy entirely removes the problem.
A fair caveat worth stating plainly: collagen is naturally low in tryptophan, so it isn't a perfect standalone protein in the way whey is. In practice that matters very little if you're eating a varied diet with protein from other sources across the day. But if a shake is your only protein source, whey still has an edge on amino acid completeness.
The Format Range
This is where NOWAY!® genuinely stands apart. Most protein brands sell powder and maybe a bar. NOWAY!® spans:
- Collagen Protein powder — 20g protein, 90 calories per serve. $89.90, currently with a free 10-serve Protein Water.
- Collagen Protein Water — 20.8g protein, 88 calories, zero fat, 0.1g sugar. Cordial-style flavours in cold water. $89.90 with a free 10-serve.
- Sparkling Water Cans — 20g protein in a ready-to-drink can. No shaker. $39.90
- Hot Chocolate — 10.5g protein plus 150mg magnesium (47% RDI) at 84 calories. An evening wind-down drink. $49.90
- Protein Jelly 10pk — 16g protein for 68 calories and 0.1g sugar. Make it at home, set it in the fridge. $39.90
- Collagen Jelly Bar — 20.8g protein, 175 calories. $69.90
- Collagen Fusion Bar — jelly and marshmallow layers, 20.5g protein. $69.90
- Creatine Collagen Mallow Bar — 10g collagen plus 3g creatine monohydrate. $69.90
- Creatine Choc Bars — 3g Creapure® creatine in a vegan chocolate bar. $69.90
The point of that breadth is compliance. Protein and creatine only work if you take them consistently, and the format that gets taken is the format that works. A chocolate bar you look forward to beats a scoop of powder you keep forgetting.
Creatine — Five Formats, Because Consistency Is Everything
Creatine is the most researched supplement in sports nutrition. The mechanism is settled: your muscles store it as phosphocreatine, which rapidly regenerates ATP during maximal effort, extending the window before you fail. More stored phosphocreatine means more quality reps, and across months that compounds into real strength and size.
The catch is that it works through daily accumulation. Full muscle saturation takes around four weeks of taking it every day, rest days included, and the benefit fades when you stop.
Which makes creatine the supplement most likely to end up half-used at the back of a cupboard. ATP Science's answer is to sell it in whatever format you'll actually stick with:
- Creapure® Creatine Monohydrate — 99.99% German purity, unflavoured powder. $49.90
- NOWAY!® Creatine Monohydrate — three sizes, HASTA certified on the 500g tub. From $29.90
- Creapure® Chewables — HASTA certified tablets. $59.90
- Creatine Sherbet Sachets — pocket-sized, no shaker. $29.95
- Creatine + Electrolytes — morning formula with hydration support. $35.90
- Creatine + Magnesium — evening formula with magnesium and L-theanine. $35.95
GutRight® — The Product With Actual Clinical Data
GutRight® Original ($64.90) is ATP Science's flagship wellness product, and it takes an approach that genuinely differs from what else is on the shelf.
Probiotics add bacteria — often transient strains that don't colonise. Prebiotics feed bacteria, but indiscriminately, which can feed harmful species as readily as beneficial ones. ATP Science's patented Modbiotic® blend of 21 plant-derived compounds does something different: it selectively modulates the microbiome, feeding beneficial species while inhibiting harmful ones.
Their own clinical study measured what happened over the 10-day protocol:
- 72% average reduction in E. coli
- 66% average increase in Bifidobacterium — one of the most beneficial genera in the human gut
- 62% of subjects saw a decrease in TMAO-producing bacteria, which are linked to cardiovascular risk
- Increases in butyrate-producing species, critical for gut lining health
Worth reading in context — this is manufacturer-run research rather than independent replication. But having measured microbiome outcomes at all puts GutRight® well ahead of a category that mostly runs on mechanism plausibility.
GOODGUT™ Powder ($54.90) and the GOODGUT™ Bar ($69.90) are the daily maintenance follow-on — 50% fibre, a 25 billion CFU postbiotic, five digestive enzymes and NZ-grown Actazin® kiwi.
Where to Start
Thirty-two products is a lot to walk into. Here's the short version.
If you want to replace your protein powder: NOWAY!® Collagen Protein. Start here if whey has ever upset your stomach.
If you want to sort out your gut: GutRight® Original for the 10-day reset, then GOODGUT™ for maintenance.
If you compete in drug-tested sport: stick to the HASTA-certified products — Pre Plus™, Protein Plus, Endurance Plus and the Creapure® Chewables.
If you keep forgetting your creatine: the Sherbet Sachets at $29.95 or the Creatine Choc Bars. A format you'll use beats a cheaper one you won't.
If you sleep badly: ZMAG at $39.90 is the TGA-listed daily mineral formula, and MAGx4 gives you four magnesium forms including brain-accessible threonate.
If you want a low-calorie protein hit: Protein Jelly — 16g of protein for 68 calories with almost no sugar is hard to beat.
Common Questions
Is collagen protein as good as whey for building muscle?
The head-to-head research suggests yes, and in the 2021 trial the collagen group actually gained more lean mass. What collagen adds that whey can't is connective tissue, joint and gut lining support. What whey has is a more complete amino acid profile. If you eat protein from other sources through the day, that gap closes.
What does HASTA certification actually protect me from?
Contamination. Supplements can pick up banned substances through shared manufacturing equipment or poorly controlled raw materials. Batch-level testing against 250+ WADA substances means the specific batch you bought was screened. Under anti-doping rules, athletes are responsible for what's in their body regardless of intent.
Is ATP Science expensive?
It sits at the premium end, and the reasons are visible in the panels — Creapure® instead of generic creatine, patented ingredients with research behind them, natural sweeteners, batch testing, and their own manufacturing facility. Whether that's worth it depends on what you're optimising for. If you compete, HASTA certification alone justifies it.
Do I need to take everything?
No. Get protein and creatine right first — they're the two with the strongest evidence. Add gut, sleep or hormonal support once the fundamentals are consistent.
Is it made in Australia?
Yes. ATP Science formulate and manufacture in their own Brisbane facility rather than contracting production out.
